Black Farmers Index

Did you know that “Farmers and ranchers receive only 15 cents (on average) out of every retail dollar spent on food at home and away from home. The rest goes for costs beyond the farm gate: wages and materials for production, processing, marketing, transportation and distribution.” (Source: American Farm Bureau Federation, Accessed 2/5/2025). When you purchase directly from farmers and ranchers in your own community, you make a real impact in their bottom line and your own community.

To celebrate Black History Month, I wanted to share some resources about how you can support Texas Black-owned farms and ranches this month by connecting with them directly.

One of my favorites is the Black Farmers Index. This non-profit makes it so easy to find Ag Producers in your area with this regional directory. Just look at all the listings in Texas! I encourage you to give them a follow on Instagram and Facebook. Their content is so informative and inspiring!
